Listen, the Flower Is Blooming | Lectures on Adolescent Sexual Health Education

发布时间:2018-01-22 | 浏览次数:
“Youth is a book so hastily written,” Xi Murong once wrote in a poem of hers.

Adolescence is probably the beginning of this book.

How can our students write colorful chapters in their book of youth? How can they better understand their physical and psychological growth and changes during puberty? Recently, Beijing Kaiwen Academy (KWA) invited Teacher Huang Lili, who is an expert at the Home of Green Apple under the National Youth Science and Technology Education Base, supervisor of the “Agony Aunt Hotline” website, member of the Beijing Sexual Health Education Research Association, and expert at the Girl Protection Fund, and Teacher Mo Nan, Master of Psychology from Germany’s Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, to give a lecture on adolescent sexual health education for KWA students in Grades 6-11.

The lecture was divided into three sessions for junior high school boy students, junior high school girl students, and all senior high school students. The lecture mainly focused on major issues concerning adolescent students: how to correctly understand the physical and psychological changes of puberty, how to develop a right attitude and get along well with opposite-sex friends, how to correctly understand non-traditional genders, and how to improve self-protection awareness and resist sexual abuse.

At the lecture, the teachers made the students feel relaxed through questionnaires, self-portraits, quizzes, and other fun activities. Gradually the students opened up and started to talk and share their “little secrets of growth.”

“Expert lectures are an important part of the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) course. Adolescents may experience dramatic emotional fluctuations and psychological conflicts because of their rapid physical changes in this stage of life. By giving them patient care and scientific guidance, we can greatly alleviate their psychological stress in this transient period of their lives. KWA and parents will make joint efforts to effectively and professionally educate adolescents on life-related issues and help more children recognize the unique and beautiful part of themselves and others,” said Li Yang, a psychology teacher at Beijing Kaiwen Academy.

In foreign countries, EQ education has long been incorporated into the teaching system of primary and secondary schools. SEL is a feature course at Beijing Kaiwen Academy for students in different learning stages.

At KWA, the students affectionately call the SEL course the “happiness course.” The course is designed to help students understand themselves and the world around them so that they will be able to adapt to a changing environment, face stress and challenges, maintain good interpersonal relationships, and develop a sense of purpose and responsibility. It will also help our students build a safer, warmer, and more positive psychological environment so that the knowledge they have acquired in the classroom can better prepare them for life outside the campus and lay a solid foundation for their future academic success and healthy development in both personality and intelligence.
