Safety Education | Mars Scout Comes to KWA

发布时间:2018-01-30 | 浏览次数:
How can you protect yourself and correctly seek help when you are in an emergency, such as a sudden disaster? How can you find safe exits quickly and accurately? How can you prevent being pushed down and trampled? On January 23, 2018, KWA pupils in Grades 1-3 had a lesson for self-help in emergencies under the guidance of Mars Scout instructors and KWA teachers.

The lesson was divided into three parts: Sign Language, Fire Escape, and Map Use.

In the Sign Language part, the instructors taught the students how to communicate with the outside world if they cannot make a sound.

The students were serious in learning the moves. They may be simple but can convey important information in a critical moment.

How can you escape in collective events such as a fire? How can you protect yourself in the event of a disaster? First of all, the instructors taught the children how to prevent themselves from being trampled if they had been pushed down to the ground.

Next, the children learned how to quickly find an exit in a closed environment full of dense smoke to increase the chance of survival. The instructors released non-toxic smoke at the scene to make it look real.

In the Map Use part, the instructors first explained to the students the classifications of maps and the meanings and uses of different signs and marks on a map. After that, the children were grouped by class and asked to seek out, according to the rules, pre-marked places on the campus with the help of a map.

In this process, under the guidance of the teachers, the students discussed with each other and kept trying. It was cold outside in winter, but it did not reduce the students’ enthusiasm for exploring the unknown. They were seen discussing on the playground, the lawn, and the walkways. The instructors gave each class marks based on how soon and accurately the students of a certain class had completed the task.

At the end of the lesson, a ceremony was held where the instructors presented a Mars Scout medal to each of the students who had completed all three parts.

Of the eleven classes in the three grades, four classes received the “Mars Scout Pioneer Class” certificate.

Through this one-day activity, the students experienced the fun of “learning while receiving training” and the sense of accomplishment from helping others. Safety education is an important part of the teaching content at Beijing Kaiwen Academy (KWA). Each semester, the school will invite professional instructors and police officers to hold special safety education seminars for students.

The hard work of the students and teachers brought them not only dazzling medals and certificates of merit, but, more importantly, it let the students have a proper sense of helping themselves and helping others in emergencies. This sense will accompany their growth and benefit them enormously.
